Wild Coastal weather – power outages, trees down

Almost 8000 North-West Coast residences and businesses were still are without power on Friday morning as a result of severe weather overnight and trees falling on power lines.

The Burnie and Wynyard areas were hardest hit, with more than 2700 TasNetworks customers without power.

More than 1700 customers in the Smithton and Circular Head area have also been affected by outages, with almost 1800 also without power in the Ulverstone, Penguin, Gawler and Gunn Plains areas, while it’s more than 1400 for the Stowport and Riana areas.

Hundreds more are without power in the Devonport and Railton areas, with four customers without power in Queenstown the only reported outage on the West Coast.

TasNetworks says to prepare for more outages with more severe weather on the way later on Friday afternoon.

A number of fallen trees have been reported on Coastal roads.

A motorist has been taken to the North-West Regional Hospital in Burnie with serious injuries after crashing their car into a fallen tree on Oldina Road near Wynyard.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds and a road weather alert for the North West Coast, with a minor flood warning also in place for the Mersey River at Liena and from Kimberly to the Latrobe township.
