Waratah-Wynyard “open” to Circular Head merge

The Waratah-Wynyard Council says it’s open to a possible amalgamation with neighbouring Circular Head Council.

Circular Head last week proposed joining up with Waratah-Wynyard along the lines of the Local Government Review Board’s interim report, option two, which would see the two councils become one.

The two councils have been resource sharing for more than a decade, with Circular Head Mayor Gerard Blizzard saying while forced amalgamations are off the table, the challenges facing Local Government in Tasmania haven’t gone away.

Waratah-Wynyard Mayor Mary Duniam says while her council is opposed to any forced amalgamations, it’s open to a voluntary merger with Circular Head as long as it benefits brings benefits to both municipalities and maintains local representation.
