Penguin has claimed the first piece of Coastal football silverware of the season, winning the NWFL women’s grand final over Wynyard in front of a record crowd.
The Two Blues led early and resisted a late comeback by the defending champions to win by five points in a match which had everything you would expect in a grand final and even something you would not, when the game was suspended 10 minutes into the third quarter due to lightning.
It was a tense last quarter in which both sides only added two points to their score, with Penguin coach Clint Schulze saying the win means a lot to the town of Penguin.
Penguin captain Emilie Saward was awarded the medal for best on ground in the grand final.
Earlier in the day, in a showcase of female football on the Coast, Wynyard won the under 14 girls grand final over Burnie by just a point, while Latrobe scored a convincing 19-point win over Ulverstone in the under 17 girls grand final.
