Study on second Cam River bridge won’t be completed until next year

A decision on a second bridge over the Cam River won’t be made until next year when the current bridge is replaced.

Work is continuing on the new bridge at Somerset, with nearby Murchison Highway and Bass Highway junction closing on Monday for a major upgrade, including the installation of traffic lights, which is expected to take at least 10 weeks to complete.

One lane of the highway will also be impacted next week, likely to cause traffic problems, as was the case when flood waters damaged the current bridge in October last year, causing massive traffic delays and renewing calls for a second bridge.

Infrastructure Minister Michael Ferguson says work on the new bridge is on schedule, but the results of a feasibility study into a second bridge won’t be available until next year.
