A women’s shed in the Huon Valley is trying to get more funding to open its doors to women of all ages and walks of life.
There are over 1200 Men’s Sheds across Australia, but only 50 She Sheds.
She Shed President Mon Luan says the funding process is proving difficult, as they cannot get access to the same funding as The Men’s Shed.
“For the similar type of funding that’s offered to The Men’s Shed, from the government, I think we were treated quite unfairly. It was pretty dismissive,” Ms Luan said.
She added that some unprotected women feel uncomfortable around men, and want their own She Shed to learn basic home maintenance skills so they don’t have to rely on tradies.
“It’s to empower them to feel independent enough that they can do these things and we’re really aiming towards those vulnerable who feel marginalised.”
