Prayer motion to be considered (again)

A motion to drop the opening prayer from Burnie City Councils will be revisited at Tuesday monthly meeting for October.

Councillor Ken Dorsey moved a similar motion last month, but it lapsed for want of a seconder, preventing any discussion on the motion.

However, Councillor Trent Aitken, who wasn’t at the September meeting, has moved an identical motion, which will most likely be seconded by Councillor Dorsey, allowing a discussion to proceed.

In his motion, Councillor Aitken simply states times have changed and we are a multicultural society which needs to be inclusive of everyone.

In his original motion, Councillor Dorsey said 56 per cent of the population is either non-Christian or has no religion at all.

Council general manager Simon Overland has recommended caution in a note included in the agenda, as he did last month.

Mr Overland says such a move is likely to prove controversial.

He says if the council wishes to adopt the motion there should be extensive community consultation to determine if there is general support for such a move, and what, if any substitution should be made.
