Work is expected to start soon in an important link in the Coastal Shared Pathway project.

The pathway will eventually run 110 km from Latrobe to Wynyard, but still has several gaps to be completed.

Access from Latrobe to Devonport is available using the pathway, but a 600m section of existing footpath at Ambleside, doesn’t meet specifications for the Coastal Pathway.

The Devonport City Council has allocated around $970,000 to upgrade the path, to 2.5 m wide, which will also necessitate narrowing the road to accommodate the new shared pathway.

The section of road will also have the speed limit reduced from 60 km/hr down to 50.

The council has received $500,000 from the State Government’s Vulnerable Road User Programme to assist with the cost of the project, which is expected to be completed by the end of June.

The stretch of the Coastal Pathway between West Ulverstone and Penguin, and Sulphur Creek to Burnie are still yet to be funded.
