Council goes it alone in name of drive

The Burnie City Council will go ahead with plans to name the internal drive at Burnie Park after Burnie-born war hero Cameron Baird VC, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2013.

The council had applied to Placenames Tasmania to have the drive named in his honour, but was knocked back because Placenames Tasmania said it will cause confusion with similar sounding names in the district, including Bird Street, Bird Road and Laird Road.

Burnie Mayor Teeny Brumby says the council is extremely disappointed, and following approaches from locals, it will go ahead with its own unofficial naming with a commemorative sign welcoming visitors to “Corporal Cameron Baird VC Drive.”
