The North-West Coast still has the worst rail safety record in the state, according to the latest figures released by operator TasRail, as part of National Rail Safety Week this week.
31 of the 39 reported failure to give way or stop at level crossings in Tasmania were on the North-West Coast.
TasRail says it’s particularly concerned with the number of reported near misses at crossings on Main Street Penguin, Formby Road Devonport, and Henslow Street at Tarleton.
There’s also also been 34 incidents of people trespassing onto rail corridors reported on the Coast in the past 12 months, making up almost half of the statewide total of 83 incidents.
Company CEO Steven Dietrich says statistics for near misses on the North-West Coast have risen by 21 per cent on the previous year.
Mr Dietrich says trespassing onto railway lines and bridges is illegal and dangerous, with pedestrian, cyclists, fishers, photographers, runners, dog walkers and school children all spotted doing the wrong thing over the past 12 months.
