Work has officially started on the long-awaited 13.2 km Cooee to Wynyard section of the Coastal Pathway project.
Infrastructure Minister and Deputy Premier Michael Ferguson turned the ceremonial first sod at Cooee yesterday for latest stretch of the shared walking and cycling pathway, which when completed, will cover 110 km from Latrobe to Wynyard.
The Cooee to Wynyard section will be completed by late next year and will include 9.1 km of 1.2 metre high fencing to prevent little penguins from getting onto the path and eventually the road.
The new section will be the 15th of 18 identified sections and is being funded with a $13.8 million State Government Grant, with around $2 million coming from the Burnie City and Wynyard-Waratah Councils.
Other recently completed sections of the pathway include the Sulphur Creek to Penguin link and Don to Turners Beach stretch.
