Burnie Council prayer to remain

September 28, 2023 10:23 am in by

A motion to remove the opening prayer from Burnie City Council meetings, which general manager Simon Overland warned could be controversial, has fallen over at the first hurdle.

Councillor Ken Dorsey said, in a motion at the council’s monthly meeting for September earlier this week, that the practice is no longer reflective of modern society, with 56 per cent of the population either non-Christian or not religious at all.

However, the motion lapsed for lack of a seconder, meaning there was no discussion on the motion.

A motion from Councillor Dorsey calling for the council to officially support the Yes Case for the Referendum for an indigenous Voice to Parliament, was also lost due to no-one else seconding the motion.
