Political donation secrecy

Details of donations to Tasmania’s political parties have been released.

Australian Electoral Commission data for last financial year shows the state Liberals were way in front for receiving contributions at around $3.8 million, with declared sources only accounting for $630,000 of that.

$1.1 million was received by Tasmania’s Labor party, sources publicly attributed at just $113,000.

The Greens were given $664,000 and declared sources were nearly 58% of that figure, by far the most transparent of the three.

Upper house independent MLC Meg Webb wants the state government’s political donation overhaul currently before the parliament to go much further.

“The bill is really aimed for the lowest bar it can, they are taking us from being the only state without laws to being the worst state in the country when it comes to transparency and accountability and that’s not good enough, I hope that in the upper house we can fix that, put some really sensible and nation best laws in place.”
