Push for lower Burnie rates rise

June 25, 2024 11:12 am in by

Two Burnie City Councillors will be looking for support at Tuesday night’s monthly council meeting for June to knock back a proposed rates increase of 6.88 per cent.

Councillors Amina Keygan and Trent Aitken have moved motions to be tabled at the meeting for alternative budgets with significantly lower rates rises.

The council will vote on the draft budget and financial plan tonight, with one of four options presented by council officers, the one with a 6.88 per cent increase as the preferred option.

Councillor Aitken wants the council to endorse the alternative which involves a rates increase of 4.5 per cent, while Councillor Keygan wants the council to adopt the model with a 5 per cent rates increase.

In a recommendation that the council stick with the proposed 6.88 per cent option, general manager Simon Overland says the alternative plans would see the council surplus reduced to an unsustainable level and cash levels reduced to below what is required to run the council business.
