A fresh group of 14 dogs are joining Tasmania’s border screening service, with a variety of breeds having completed their training at Launceston Airport.
Joining the traditionally used Beagles are Labradors, German short haired pointers, Springer and Cocker spaniels.
Primary Industries Minister Jo Palmer explains breed diversity will enhance flexibility for border protection.
“When I was out at the Launceston Airport the other day it was absolutely wonderful to meet with our local dog handlers who have been going under as much training as our dogs themselves, they’re actually trained by Dog Force Australia, they do an amazing job working with our handlers, working with out dogs.”
“This investment provides the highest level of risk detection capability in Tasmania in recent years, further protecting our primary industries, natural environment and social amenity from risks,” Minister Palmer said.
The dogs and their handlers are also a highly visible deterrent for high-risk material entering Tasmania.
