Bus stop anger

Moving a bus stop 20 metres in Launceston is at the centre of a push back from those who expect they will be negatively impacted.

St John Street traders who will have the stop outside their businesses are angry at the prospect of associated “anti-social behaviour” and not being consulted by the Launceston City Council.

Alderman Robin McKendrick told Tasmania Talks, there's some reasoning behind the move.

"What it enables is for the footpath to be widened out, it enables for seeking trees, activities to take place within that section of St John Street, it allows a division between the bus stops and the footpaths, it gives a better atmosphere."

But Launceston Chamber of Commerce President, Tim Holder claims the Council isn't reflecting community expectations.
